Journal, 1853.

This volume, entitled _Journal of a Traveler in Europe in 1853_, mainly consists of published extracts from notes and letters written by Colton during his trip. The extracts appeared in the _Worcester Daily Spy_ in 1856. The volume contains an introduction, several notes and appendixes written by George Jaques (1816-1872) of Worcester. Jaques' handwritten additions to the volume are generally critical of Colton's anti-Catholic observations. The volume also contains published letters written by Thomas Kinnicutt (1835-1882) of Worcester to the _Worcester National Aegis_ describing observations made during a trip to Arabia and India in late 1856 and early 1857. The volume also includes other published letters and journal extracts of anonymous writers which appeared in New York and Worcester newspapers concerning trips abroad. There are comments and criticisms by George Jaques of these items as well.
